Dr Joshua Wolrich is one of the most integrous influencers on social media at present. A full-time surgical doctor in the NHS, he uses social media to fight against weight stigma and misinformation.
Joshua had an interesting start online. As a newly qualified doctor with a history of yo-yo dieting, he originally set up a weight loss Instagram account after he convinced himself it would be different after six years of medical school. After realising that he still believed the rife misinformation around weight loss and dieting despite his training, his account became dedicated to fighting what he calls, “nutribollocks” - spurious nutrition advice with little to no scientific evidence, frequently used on social media to make a profit; promotes disordered eating.
After delving into the complexities of weight science and the Health at Every Size approach, Joshua realised that he had a make a public and deliberate shift away from promoting weight loss online. The subsequent name and content change exemplify the integrous manner by which he runs his social media presence. A change in message always carries with it the risk of leaving followers behind, yet through his honesty and willingness to be wrong he has not only brought them along for the journey, but exploded in popularity since then. Joshua has since been a finalist for a 2019 Shorty Award in Health & Wellness, along with being shortlisted for Best Instagram at the 2019 Health Blog Awards UK & IRE.
Having grown up with a love of amateur dramatics, Joshua is no stranger to public speaking. He has given talks to secondary schools, medical students and also regularly gives presentations to his peers in the hospital environment.
In order to spread his message even further, Joshua has recently turned his talents to podcasting. A big proponent of staying in his lane, he collaborated with a nutritionist colleague to start “Cut Through Nutrition” in order to address nutrition misinformation. The first season, comprising of six episodes, currently has over 115k downloads. After that resounding proof of concept, further seasons and additional podcasts are in the works.
There are very few full-time doctors on social media doing quite as much as Joshua is. If his engagement rates and current growth is anything to go by, look out for a foray into traditional media soon.
